Senior bucket list

Before you toss your cap in the air, try these must-do JMU experiences

As a senior’s Madison Experience comes to a close, emotions can run high. For many, Harrisonburg and the JMU campus have become a home-away-from-home, full of years of memories and favorite places. Some seniors are coping with the change through the curation of bucket lists. Here are some on- and off-campus activities for future graduates to add to their list.

On campus

  • Visit your freshman dorm, and relive memories of years past.

Join in on this beloved senior tradition where you say goodbye to your first home at JMU and maybe even say hello to its new residents.

  • Visit the Kissing Rock, a Quad legend students might remember from their first JMU tour  — bonus points if it’s with someone special.

Unearthed during the construction of Alumnae Hall in 1920, Kissing Rock served as a private place for female students to hide from their dorm mother when saying goodbye to a special someone. The legend states that the person you kiss at the rock will become your future spouse.

Who wouldn’t enjoy a weekend brunch?

  • Treat yourself to a final, all-you-can-eat D-Hall brunch.

On Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., D-Hall serves its famous brunch for those getting a slow start to the weekend. East Campus residents can enjoy the same brunch experience at E-Hall.

  • Find a building on campus you’ve never visited, and take a stroll through the hallways.

Maybe your major kept you from East Campus, or maybe you’ve passed a building on the Quad for the past four years but never stepped inside. Don’t leave a single door unopened.

  • Snap a pic with Jimmy.

As a fun challenge, try to locate every statue of James Madison on campus and take a photo with him. Or maybe Duke Dog statues are more your style.

Off campus

  • The beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains surrounding campus are full of opportunities for students wanting to get out in nature. Hike High Knob for more of a workout, or drive to the top of Reddish Knob to enjoy a peaceful sunrise.

  • Take advantage of student discounts while you still can.

Your “student” status can get you discounts at many local establishments when you provide your JACard at checkout.

  • Enjoy the warm weather and partake in the Harrisonburg ice-cream scene.

As graduation nears and it’s starting to warm up, there’s no better way to enjoy a spring day than an ice cream outing with friends. Student favorites include Kline’s Dairy Bar, Bruster’s and Bella Gelato.
